Climbing trip to North Wales (Snowdonia)

Depending on the weather, Wales in the winter can offer a wide range of climbing, from the Llanberis pass mountain routes to bolted slate or North-coast sport routes. There’s also the possibility of good winter routes (if the weather goes cold soon) or spectacular winter mountain walking.

Staying at the Emily Kelly Hut at the foot of Snowdon.

February

11 Feb 2022 - 13 Feb 2022

Climbing trip to Yorkshire

There will be numerous sport and trad climbing options available.
Staying at Ivy Cottage, Horton-in-Ribblesdale (Craven pothole club hut).

11 Feb 2022 - 13 Feb 2022

Caving trip to Yorkshire

Piggybacking on the climbing trip. Staying at the Craven Hut in Horton in Ribblesdale.

Yorkshire has a huge selection of options for caving. Although there are a few non-SRT options, caving in Yorkshire is more vertical, so ideally you’d need to be comfortable with basic SRT (using ropes). Could potentially have a play around in Alum pot on Sunday for anyone who wants to give it a try but not commit to a full day’s caving.

As usual there’s also plenty of walking including Yorkshire’s famous 3 peaks, and a waterfalls walk in Ingleton that is pretty spectacular if the weather is wet.

Caving trip to Penwyllt (South Wales)

Staying in SWCC hut. As of 26th January they are requesting people stay in
groups of 6, so I have requested a booking for 6 and if it proves popular
we can request more (there are currently 15 spaces), and split into groups.

The hut is in a great location for caving and walking. There’s also some
climbing (Dinas Rock is not far away and has 272 routes) and the Penderyn
distillery. Most of the caving here does not require any specialist gear,
and there are loads of beginner friendly options.

Scottish winter climbing trip

We will be heading to Fort William in Scotland.

Scotland in winter is very beautiful and provides the opportunity to do
winter mountaineering activities on snow and ice.

On this trip we are also organising a 2 day winter skills course to
cover the skills necessary to safely explore mountains in winter
conditions, including use of crampons and ice axe (suitable for beginners).

March

04 Mar 2022 - 06 Mar 2022

Caving trip to Llangattock (South Wales)

Staying at Chelsea Speleological Society hut Whitewalls. Provisionally booked 6 people
to stay in the hut. There is also space for another 6 to camp if it proves
popular (you can still use the hut facilities if camping, but the bunkroom
is restricted to 6 at the moment).

Right next to some of the longest caves in South Wales including Daren
Cilau and Agen Allwedd. There’s also a crag next to the hut and plenty of
other climbing options nearby.

Depending on the group there’s the potential here to do some really big
trips (Daren even has two underground camps, as it’s a 20h epic to get to
the far end and back in one go). Agen Allwedd has some more beginner
friendly options, but also some 6-8h trips for the keen.

Caving trip to the Peak District

Piggybacking on the climbing trip. Staying at the TSG hut in Castleton.
We’ve hopefully got a leader for a trip to the Alderly Edge mines on
Saturday (Thanks Geoff), and could run a fairly short beginner friendly
trip on Sunday if anyone wants to give caving a go.

April

02 Apr 2022 - 03 Apr 2022

Novice climbers’ meet

Day of introductory trad climbing for beginners. Beginners should aim to be competent belaying at a climbing wall first. If you’re interested in this trip, please get in touch well in advance.

Note: this is a one-day event. It’ll either happen on the Saturday or the Sunday depending on which has the best weather forecast, so keep both days free if you can!

08 Apr 2022 - 10 Apr 2022

Caving trip to Mendip

Staying at the Wessex Caving Club hut. The
hut is walking distance from Swildons Hole, which is an excellent
sporting trip and Eastwater, which is a bit more of a challenge. There are
also places like Burrington Combe, which is good for beginners as you can
do several shorter trips and people can retire to the tea room when they’ve
had enough.

Several trips have gated access or leader systems in place. If anyone wants
anything in particular, let me know and I’ll attempt to organise it.

There’s also plenty of climbing options, so climbers are more than welcome
(or why not try a day of each?)

08 Apr 2022 - 10 Apr 2022

Sport climbing trip to Cheddar Gorge

Easter bank holiday climbing trip to Cornwall

West Cornwall is one of Britain’s great climbing areas. The area is famous for big, serious multipitch adventures in dramatic locations, but there’s also a lot of excellent coastal climbing at amenable grades in less committing situations. On top of that, there are plenty of extracurricular options including walking, cycling and the ever popular pasties and cream teas.

We are staying at Kelynack Caravan and Camping Park. Kelynack is small and secluded, nestling alongside a stream, just a mile from the coast in the beautiful Cot Valley, in Far West Cornwall.

29 Apr 2022 - 02 May 2022

Bouldering trip to Fontainebleau (France)

Fontainebleau (or Font) is probably the world’s best place to go bouldering. It is
located just south of Paris in the forest. It has more than 30,000
problems, so there is something for any level of climber. If you have
never been then you are in for a real treat!

We will be driving over on the ferry and camping at La Musardiere camping near Fontainebleau.

Please sign up by the 1st April.

29 Apr 2022 - 01 May 2022

Caving trip to North Wales

Accommodation TBC, but hopefully a mountaineering hut in the
Blaenau Ffestiniog area. Lot’s of walking and climbing options. Don’t know
as much about the caving here, but there are some famous mine trips, such
as the ‘entertaining’ Croesor Rhosydd through trip and Cwmorthin which is
the quarry where Go Below have one of their underground assault courses.

Cancelled.

May

13 May 2022 - 15 May 2022

Climbing trip to Wye Valley

Located on the England Wales border in the heart of the Forest of Dean, Symonds Yat is a beautiful
climbing destination in the Wye Valley. It is known for its weathered juggier limestone trad climbing.
The Longstone Pinnacle is a spectacular climb for those wanting a challenge. There are also sport
climbing options not far away.

20 May 2022 - 22 May 2022

Bouldering day trip to the Peak District

Weekend climbing trip to the Peak District
(Joint trip with cavers, camping near Whaley Bridge)

This might make a bit of a change from the usual trips to the Eastern Edges. We’ll be pretty close to several crags including Windgather, Castle Naze and the Kinder Southern Edges, which are pretty beginner-friendly.

For those that don’t like all this trad malarkey, it’s just a short drive from Harpur Hill Quarry, which has a number of lower grade limestone sport routes, and several good bouldering spots.

20 May 2022 - 22 May 2022

Caving trip to the Peak District (Alderley Edge copper mines)
(Joint trip with climbers, camping near Whaley Bridge)

Looks like we have a guide for a return trip to the Alderley Edge copper
mines. This time to explore some of the flooded levels and adits in a
bathtub (that’s right, they have a bathtub with the plughole blocked that
you can row across across a small underground lake and down some of the
flooded adits!?).
